Default WOW's "8.5 Million Players" is a scam

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/issue/103/13

Quote:
When developers talk about those 8.5 million subscribers, they're presenting that data in a way North American consumers aren't used to hearing. Traditionally, when gamers read about subscriber numbers, they're getting regionally focused numbers.
In reality, only roughly 2.25 million players subscribe to WoW in North America.
Interesting fact.

Note that there are also those people who decide to get like 5 accounts when they play a game. It's sickening. I'm sure accounts even among those 2.25 million are doubles.

WoW is garbage.

Uhh, how is it a scam?

You'd have to be really stupid to read it as referring to America only.
Are Americans really so ignorant/self absorbed?
MMOGs are essentially international games, why would they quote a smaller number like 2.25 million instead of 8?

/puts on a flame proof suit.

Yeah WOW isn't certainly game for me, competitive pvp player, but calling their numbers "scam" is huge BS. So what if only 1/4th of a player base is American? Blizzard never claimed that all those 8 millions are American players. I'm sure ppl aren't that dumb, and realize there is a huge populated and dynamic world outside America. In fact, some games, like Guild Wars are more popular in Europe than in US

This thread's title is stupid.

I actually assumed that right away when I heard "WoW reaches 8.5 million subscribers!" To assume it's only in America is nothing less than dumb.

If you felt like that, I don't think it's safe to say it was the game's fault.

I expected that Blizzard had just picked a number out of the blue and doubled it....but the fact that they mean 8.5 million INTERNATIONALLY is no news to me... You must be pretty ignorant if you think the USA are the only country that play it.

I don't agree. I'm hardly a WoW fan, in fact i played it for about 7 months, quit, and not planning to return ever again, but I have to congratulate Blizzard on amazing success. Even for worldwide charts 8.000.000 active users, paying lots of money each month is a huge accomplishment. Having in mind that second biggest competitor , Lineage, at the moment has around 1.500.000 subscribers, and others staying way, way behind -they obviously have done something right. And even if 8.000.000 sold copies isn't that impressive ( console games often hit much higher numbers ), its continuous stream of money from all that accounts, every month. In game development industry, especially on PC market, its huge success.

Edit : this chart speaks for itself.

This is not a debate about America or its citizens. Please cease with the pointless flames; if you've got to argue, take it to PMs.

8 million people dnt play it...in a mag it said that WoW got there number from the amount of cpoies sold...and quite a lot of people stop paying the fees or get sick of the game and leave. I highly dought there is 8 million active users atm.

You shouldn't be bashing WoW, some people like it, like me. It's something to do when GW has NO content for me that's interesting right now. I'm sure when GWEN comes out it may be different, but at least until GW2, I'm with WoW.

You shouldn't bash something that you're very ignorant about. Just because all the other MMO fanboys are saying the rival one sucks shouldn't mean you jump onto that bandwagon. I think the PS3 sucked just because everyone else was agreeing and the price was ridiculous, but I played it a few times and it's a very good system. Same thing with WoW, don't give the ol' "Oh yeah I made a character, the game sucks, too cartoony, stupid", etc. First off, it's graphics are accordingly accurate to the Warcraft RTS series, and so that more people can play the game on their PC's WITHOUT performance lag, especially when you got 100+ people in one spot. At least it doesn't lag for me like when GW lagged like HELL in the wintersday event.

The point is, you shouldn't have bragging rights about ANYTHING until you try both sides.

And this topic... How is saying 8 mil WORLDWIDE a scam? I think you're just too stupid to read. And 2.25 mil in North America is still ALOT of damn players, thats almost as much GW has WORLDWIDE...

Yeah because I'm sure people will pay over $100 a month for a game... Idiot.

This thread is not about America or its citizens or about WoW bashing.

This thread isnt fair in that way, since, there are mostly GuildWars players here. IN many cases most of the GW players never played WoW more then two weeks. So yes I understand the negativety, and ofcourse the graphic style doesnt fit everyone. Get in some WoW players to discuss with us, then we have a fair fight.
